Farm Health and Safety
Farmers and ranchers suffer from countless disabilities like arthritis, lung problems, diabetes, heart trouble, obesity, back problems, vision or hearing problems, respiratory diseases, and much more. If you are familiar with a farmer or rancher’s lifestyle, it is not hard to see why these individuals suffer from such problems. The job typically involves heavy lifting, repetitive bending, exposure to harmful chemicals and toxic gases, overexposure to sun, the use and maintenance of dangerous equipment, etc. In addition to the physical hazards, there are also emotional concerns. America´s farmers and ranchers have to cope with more stress than the average worker. Droughts, floods, pests, long hours, financial concerns, and other complications can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration.
Hezekiah Gibson, UFUSA President, is a farmer who has experienced some of these disabilities, specifically obesity, high blood pressure, joint pain, and diabetes. After struggling with these problems for years, he took on a healthier lifestyle losing over 100lbs, changing his diet, and implementing an exercise regimen. Today, Gibson notices positive changes in his blood pressure, joint pain, and diabetes. “I am glad that I made the decision to live a healthier life. My quality of life is much better”, says Gibson.
